[One of Shiraishi's greatest weaknesses, as he would put it, was making food. He was very good at things like Okonomiyaki and noodles, but that was mostly because he had practiced those for ages. Especially Okonomiyaki, since he was from Osaka, but noodles had come with their team's coach being poor prudent about what he's treating the team to.
Now that he doesn't have so much pressure on being a captain and managing school at the same time, he's decided it might be a good time to learns some cooking basics.
So whenever Vietnam doesn't seem too busy, he'll look into the kitchen from the doorway.]
[For someone who was so scientific and accurate when it came to everything (as well as a keen admirer of information), Vietnam would never have expected him to have a weakness in cooking. Then again, he was really only fourteen-fifteen years old, it's not like it is expected of him to learn something like that so quickly.
Either way, she's happy to make food for him like she would the whole family, and looks up while she's putting away some shopping.]
[Shiraishi smiles with one of his calm, positive smiles. There's nothing to be ashamed of in asking for help, so he sees no reason to be awkward. That may have been so a year or so, but he learned his lesson with his friends.
The thought of Vietnam being his mother in this place was still something to get used to though, so he was still overly polite with both her and Ichinose.]
I was wondering, if I could help you with dinner. I want to learn the basics of cooking, so I though learning from you would be a good start.
Of course, if it would be too much of a bother I can continue learning by myself.
[He's polite, and humble when he asks her this. Yet the way he asks, he is sure of himself? Like a confident young man who knows that the best way to learn is also through others.
It's nice that he's reaching out to them in a place like this.]
Oh? That is fine, if we are living together, it would be nice to cook together once in a while too. I also had to be guided in order to know what I do now.
[She crosses her arms to think about this.] In that case, you can choose what we should have for dinner tonight.
[It's a sign of Shiraishi being comfortable with the people he's living right now. It took him a small while, but he's started to accept this as his new home.]
Thank you, Vietnam-san. I'll try not to mess up.
[Everyone made mistakes, but Shiraishi really hated making them. Be it tennis or something else, he wanted to try and be as precise as possible... even if that didn't work on some things no matter how well he tried.]
Oh. Hmm. [He looked a little at the groceries Vietnam had just brought in.] Would curry work?
Do not worry so much when it does happen. [Because she's there with him!] The good part about cooking is that you need not be so precise. If you make a mistake, it can still be easily repaired. [Unlike baking, that's a different story.]
Curry would definitely work with the ingredients we have. [She spreads out what she has purchased across the counter. There's a variety of greens, including the all important potatoes and carrots. Meat is already in the refrigerator, so they just need to get that out.] What do you think?
It will... just taste different with a personal touch of the maker, right?
[Maybe once Shiraishi knows how to cook, he'll learn how to bake. It would be fun to bake something as a thanks for teaching him... though he'd also want to experience on healthy things and baking.]
I'd say let's go with that. I've always wanted to test making it myself.
Yes, exactly! If I remember correctly, this is also something that occurs often amongst ramen chefs?
[And something she noticed when she went to visit her brother and got to try out some of the local ramen.
Baking, she can see is something he'd be into. It's very structured and particular, requiring the ingredients to be more exact than it is in cooking. More of a science, and since he likes eliminating useless moves, he could probably benefit from it.
Meanwhile--] Alright! We have these ingredients, now let me see, we might have some of the base around somewhere. [Where did she leave all the stock. Ah, here it is, in this pantry. She takes out a few so they can look at them, and places them by the ingredients.]
[He wasn't the most experienced with Ramen, but he did notice that tastes varied between places he had visited, even if he usually took the same dish.]
I didn't realize curry had this many ingredients... or that we need a base for it.
[She nods before she gives him room to analyse and choose.]
Indeed, it is why many are able to be creative with making their curries. The ingredients do not strictly have to be the same, as long as it still works.
First, we need to make the sauce base though, so we'll bring out these sauces. [She takes the curry powder, flour, and a couple of others.] I believe these are what my brother used.
[Shiraishi wasn't always so good with that. It was easier to go by the books. If you asked him what kind of tennis he'd play if he didn't stick to basics he wouldn't know the answer.]
[She'd probably tell him to stick to his own tennis style. It might not be creative, but he made such a method his own. Not everyone can destroy geniuses with the power of basic skills.]
Oh! [She felt a little careless for this, and quickly rushed over to get the Asian cookbook. How careless because for someone who prides himself in following instructions, she didn't get out the set of instructions.]
Here it is! I am sorry for not taking it out earlier. [She turns to the right page and lays it down on the counter.]
[Most likely he would stick to the basics even if he had any kinds of ideas for different moves. It was how he played and while it was originally for the sake of his team, it's a part of him.
Shiraishi smiles, a little awkwardly at that.]
It's alright, Vietnam-san. I figure you must know how to make this without instructions already...
[But at least his basics and by the book cooking will be perfect!
She laughs awkwardly before smoothing out the pages.]
To be quite honest, I don't remember the instructions exactly only because I make it with my own kind of flavour. But as we are just starting out, it is best we follow the book.
[She laughs softly before nodding, giving him a tiny fist pump.]
I understand. It would be like throwing you over a cliff otherwise. Alright! We have our ingredients, now we need our utensils, then we can measure out what we need.

She nods.]
We can do it straight into the saucepan. Which one do you think would be best? [This is also a test!]

Hmm... maybe a wok pan? It's deep so the ingredients won't fall off.
