The world was full of humans with supernatural powers. These powers were usually small, large or something in between, but they were usually under control. Most people lived through their lives without ever realizing they were able to do something a normal human couldn't.
Sometimes, however, there were powers that were really powerful and the user couldn't control them at all. Incredible powers weren't something you saw often. To be quite honest, most people considered it a fortune that they hadn't encountered such powers because of the disasters they caused. Then there were those, who considered seeing such powers as their job, to actively stop them from going berserk.
Shiraishi Kuranosuke was part of the second group. He considered himself a middle class power-user, but his powers were the type that were ideal to use in such job. It was a good job, even if it was dangerous. At least he could help people who needed the help.
Today was the day when he would meet a person he needed to look after for an unknown time. Kirihara Akaya, was what his papers said. There weren't many records of this one so he'd have to find out himself and-- wait, why was the paper suddenly getting wet? Shiraishi looked up at the sky.
"Oh, you're kidding me..." He was sure the weather forecast hadn't promised any rain. That's why he didn't bring an umbrella. Shiraishi ran the last few meters to the office where he was supposed to meet Kirihara.
To be fair, having supernatural powers hadn't really been that big of a deal for most of Kirihara's life — he was naturally cheerful, with only the occasional downswing. Then puberty began to hit and his powers suddenly deepened along with his mood swings and then he could barely even think to himself about how sad he was before there was a sudden downpour over the city.
The truly difficult thing to deal with, though, was that it tended to spiral back in on itself. His inability to control himself would just make him even more irritated, upset, down on himself. That's why he'd decided that he needed the help (or at least, that's the version he'd like to tout, the truth is that his upperclassman-slash-leader Yukimura had just given him The Smile and Kirihara had swallowed hard and nodded furtively as he promised to get on that).
So when Shirahishi entered, he'd find Kirihara there sulking while he waited, slumped in a chair and cheeks puffed out in a pout. "Seriously, I don't want to do this..." he muttered to himself, slinking down even further.
It's pretty easy to recognize who the person Shiraishi needed to meet was. Usually everyone he needed to look after wasn't really thrilled about it. That and he had been given a description on how he looked; black, messy hair and green eyes. It also helped that Kirihara was actually the only one around right now.
"Kirihara Akaya-kun, right?" Shiraishi said after a while while he was trying to dry his hair a little bit. "I'm Shiraishi Kuranosuke and I'll be your mentor from now on."
"... Hey, I have a question," Kirihara asked, apparently going through a rebellious phase first and foremost. He pulls himself up in his seat, sitting up to his full height. "What's a mentor supposed to do, exactly? 'Cause the way I see it, that isn't gonna stop this kinda thing from happening, is it?"
Ah, the infamous rebellious phase. That's usually what Shiraishi would expect from people younger than him - which seems to be the case here, even if the age difference isn't that much this time around.
"I'm going to teach you how to control your powers - whether it's an emotional thing or just pure power control", Shiraishi said as he let his hands fall to his sides. "Though part of my job is also to stop you from going rampage with my own powers."
Somebody teaching him how to control his emotions? Kirihara gave Shiraishi an openly suspicious look at that. That sounded to him like some freaky mind control stuff, and he was not going to fall for that so easily. Ignoring the fact that Yukimura would never have him put in the charge of people who did freaky mind control stuff.
"Alright, then, what kind of powers do you have?" he asked, resisting the urge to cock an eyebrow like they do on the crime shows he'd seen on TV.
If it only was as easy as mind controlling. Shiraishi's methods took a lot of time which was why he would most likely spend teaching Kirihara quite a long time... at least with his attitude like this.
Instead of telling what his powers were, Shiraishi raised his hand to point at a nearby pot plant. Gently, he made it so that the plant would grow and make a vine that surrounded Kirihara.
For a few moments, Kirihara just watched as the plant grew unnaturally fast, openly fascinated by the way that it curled through the air — and then he realized it was curling around him and he let out a decidedly undignified yelp. "Okay, okay, I got it!" he said, attempting to downplay that oh-so-respectable squeak he'd let slip. "Control of plants or something like that... uh, I don't get how that helps my situation, though..."
Shiraishi let the plant grow elsewhere and attach itself on the wall behind Kirihara. "It's not just controlling plants. I'm also good at making different sort of powders and herbs that can help calm your mind when you're about to do something bad", he explained, since it was a little hard to show that suddenly. "That was more for other sort of punishments."
Punishments... Kirihara definitely didn't like the sound of that; he practically swallowed audibly. "I don't do it on purpose," he said for no reason in particular other than he's already trying to prevent any earthy punishments if at all possible. "But, uh... plants and stuff, that's not all, right? There's, like... mental techniques and whatever?"
"Regardless of if you do or not, I need to stop you anyway", Shiraishi said with a soft sigh. "And no, there aren't. There are other ways to help you than mind control."
He perked up at that — even though his control was bad, Kirihara was nothing if not eager. "What kind of ways?" he asked. "I'll do my best, I promise."
That was at least reassuring to hear, to be honest. "Meditation, mostly. I know it might sound boring and inefficient, but I have trained quite a few people through these methods", he said and then after a short pause: "You know those rumors about that Osakan boy who could easily lift up a building when he was in rage?"
"Yeah!" Kirihara said, almost immediately, perking up slightly at the mention. He remembered hearing of it, mostly because when he'd heard of it, he'd immediately thought that's so awesome. "... You trained that guy, seriously?"
"Yes. With the same methods I plan on using with you", Shiraishi said. It had been his most challenging assignment, but he wasn't going to take Kirihara lightly either. Not based on the records he had gotten.
That was definitely enough for Kirihara to take Shiraishi as an instructor seriously. And besides, Kirihara was certain that he could do it if he tried, it's just — protracted periods of needing to concentrate is difficult. "... I'll do my best, then," he said.
